The Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, truly were their fathers boys. Prodigies of Alchemy from a early age yet they were taught by no master of the art. Instead there only teacher was the books their father had left behind. But even with the sadness that loomed over the absence of their father, they felt they could get through anything as long as they had their mother.

Then one day when they returned home the ultimate tragedy awaited them. As they stepped in through the front door they found there mother collapsed on the ground. From that moment on their lives would never be the same. However, they were not about to site back and let fate take there beloved mother from them. They were determined to use a forbidden Alchemy to bring her back.

They both trained as hard as they could to learn everything possible about human transmutation. As soon as they thought they had figured out all the equations and theorems then it was time to finally bring there mother back to them. But you see Alchemy works on the law of equivalent exchange. In order to gain anything first something of equal value must be lost. Being the young boys they were they were, they thought that blood being the spark of life would be a good thing to exchange. They figured that since it was their blood, the blood that had also ran through her veins, that that would somehow be enough to bring her back. But some things just can't be measured.

While they thought that they had done everything right something still went wrong. In the process the forces of alchemy broke down Al's entire body and Ed's leg. With no time to work the only thing Ed could manage to do to save his brother was do a spirit attachment to bind Al's soul to a nearby suit of armor. The thing was that in order to try it Ed sacrificed his own arm in exchange for the attachment.

With nothing else to do Al carried his brother to the Rockbell's in hopes that they could save Ed's life. After Ed was fitted with auto-mail the boys decided to put there past behind them and try to make things right once again. They decide to burn down there house and set out so Ed can become a state alchemist.

While they have put their dreams of bringing back their mother on hold permanently, they are still after human transmutation. In order to get their own bodies back to the way they once were that is the exact form of forbidden alchemy they must once again attempt. Since only state alchemist have access to the best books and research that is where there journey must start.

But being a state alchemist comes with its own set of problems. Ed must carry out his duties to the state as well as research for the legendary philosophers stone. Only by obtaining the stone can they ever hope to correct the problems on there past. But are the secrets of the stone something the brothers really want to know?
