Kuwabara had been Yusukes biggest rival at school. While he is a great fighter he just never could seem to get the upper hand when it came to Yusuke. He lost to him time and time again. Like Yusuke, Kuwabara, isn't the best of student or thought of with much respect by the regular population, but he is a man unwavering honor. His ethics code is far beyond that of most "good" people and he takes it very seriously. If it goes against his code of honor than there is absolutely nothing that could make him do it, ever. That's the one thing that separates him from the normal thug is his unflinching morals.

While in the beginning he is out to be the absolute best, and that means defeating Yusuke, he eventually hits a mutual respect and understanding with his long standing rival. In fact that's how they end up becoming best friends who know that above all else that they can rely on each other. Together they make a formidable team and with Kuwabara's own spirit energy growing they prove to be a match that's hard to beat.
