Crispin Freeman

If you’re a fan of dubbed anime then chances are you have heard the voice(if not the name too) of Crispin Freeman. With all he has done its hard not to. He has a very distinguishable voice that can be easily picked out by any fan, though sometimes he does get a bit tricky with us. Some of the first voices that may come to mind however is, Alucard in Hellsing, Zelgadis in Slayers, and Tsume in Wolf’s Rain not to mention a slew of others.

Now I know I said that dub fans know his voice well but that alone is a comment that holds no merit without knowing the reasons why. Yes, he has dubbed plenty of anime and yes he has a stand out voice but there is more to it than that. Not only does he have the talent to make him stand out in the crowd but he has the backing of popular shows that are trying to be mainstream anime in America. For those who don’t believe me turn on Cartoon network at the moment. Chances are if its anime and they are playing it then Crispin is Voicing a character in it. The reach of his voice doesn’t just stop there either. Sometimes it seems hard to find a good show to pick up that does not hold him within it. Not that that is a bad thing mind you. It just means when it comes to anime dubbing the man has good taste.

But what about the man outside anime? How much is there? The answer is quite a bit. If you thought that he was some sort of one trick pony you would be dead wrong. Yes, he is a voice actor but that does not mean he is not a REAL actor. You may not see him on the screen in much live action(not that he has never done it) but he has done his fair share outside of the dubbing studio.

Now people may not think it but many voice actors such as Crispin are trained ACTORS. Like any trained actor the thrill is the acting itself. Face it if it was for the fame and money voice actors would be fairly scarce. He found the thrill and excitement of acting and ran with it. The best place to do that is, of course, on stage. He has appeared in many plays through the years. He has also been both on and off Broadway. He has been in at least 20 plays that I know of. And you know what they say. The best actors are theater actors.

However lets not just focus on the acting. His talent runs beyond that. He is an incredible writer and has done excellent script adaptations for such anime shows as I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs, Pokemon, the last 12 episodes of Witch Hunter Robin and more. It takes a certain knack to be able to take a script that was originally done in another language and bring it over to your own and make it flow flawlessly. It is harder than it looks and those without the sense of the languages normally don’t make the change seamless. He is just talented enough to make you forget for those brief moments of watching that this was not written for your language at all. It just sounds that natural.

Writing is not the end of it though. He also directs. Again its not something that us fans think too much about but it is vital to the production. Without a quality director you can not get a quality production no matter how hard you try. The director is what binds it all together. Plus they are the ones faced with all the added stress that comes with shows and deadlines. Crispin however meets the change and has never failed us yet. Examples of his directing ability can be more than found in I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs and Scrapped Princes. Really I don’t think there is anything he can’t do once he sets his mind to it.

Now I could stop right there but his dedication sure doesn’t. Crispin is very giving to his fans and makes every point possible to interact with then am show his appreciation. He realizes that without the fans he would not be at this point in his career. He has his own website to keep them informed plus he is a part of the Crispin Freeman Fansite on Yahoo so that he can interact with fans on a larger scale, answer questions when possible and let them get a little peek of who he is. Granted his schedule does not always allow for him to be there as often as he would like but he truly does all that he can and what more could we want really?
