It is 11th century Europe, and it is a dark time in history when monsters, vampires, and other creatures of the night roam freely across the land. It is also a time of knights and nobility, magic and alchemists. It is during this time that we find two men: Leon Belmont and Mathias Cronqvist. Leon is a courageous man who is afraid of nothing and whose combat abilities are second to none, while Mathias is a genius tactician. The two have been close friends, and they trust each other implicitly.
The Crusades are raging in the East, and Leon and Mathias’s company has seen its share of action and had always returned victorious, due to Leon’s skill and bravery and Mathias’ strategy. Unfortunately things begin to unravel for the two when, upon returning home from yet another successful campaign, they find that Mathias’s beloved wife, Elisabetha, had died during their absence. Mathias was devastated by her loss, and he soon became bedridden, leaving Leon to lead their company by himself.
A year after Elisabetha’s loss, Mathias has still not recovered from his grief, but thanks to Leon’s efforts, their company remains proudly undefeated. But things take a darker turn when an army of monsters suddenly appears on Leon’s lands. Leon wants permission from the church to fight the creatures, but the Church, wrapped up in fighting the Turks, has no intention of granting it. Then Mathias appears, having struggled from his sickbed and informs Leon that the monsters are coming from the domain of a vampire that lives in a forest that is cloaked in a perpetual night. He also gives Leon the terrible news that Leon’s own betrothed, Sara Trantoul has just been kidnapped by the vampire and taken to his castle in the heard of the Forest of Eternal Night. Knowing that the Church will never allow him to go challenge the vampire to save Sara, Leon surrenders his title of Baron, and leaving his sword behind as it belongs to the company, he enters the Eternal Night, alone and unarmed.
