Master of the Dark Palace of Waterfalls and guardian of the Green Orb, Joachim dwells deep within the castle sewers. While the exact details of his turning are never revealed, it is known that he was turned into a vampire by Walter and was a servant of the more powerful vampire for a time. At some point before the game, he rebelled against his master and, as punishment, he was imprisoned down in the orb room. The exact details of how and why he rebelled are also never revealed. What is known is that Walter’s possession of the Ebony Stone was responsible for Joachim’s loss to the older vampire.
In battle, Joachim wields five enormous swords through psychic power, and they act as part of his offense and a near impenetrable defense. Only after one figures out their secret can Joachim be touched. Of course, Joachim won’t be standing there waiting for the player to figure him out. He has a variety of attacks to use against Leon, many of which include use of his swords. He can send two spinning after Leon, and they will track his for a short distance before returning. He can also summon jets of frozen flame out of the floor in the immediate area around him, cause his swords to rise up as one out of the floor under Leon’s feet, as well as cause them to appear out of the air around him.
Available as a playable character after defeating the game with Leon, Joachim now only has his swords for attacking, and his impenetrable defense is no more. He has two stances: with his swords revolving around him, in which they attack with a slashing motion, or hovering behind him, in which they attack with a more powerful stabbing motion. Each stance also has a special attack that can be uses when enough MP is available. Joachim gains MP from defeating enemies and destroying candles. He cannot carry items, but he can use potions and food, consuming them as soon as he picks them up. During his trek through the castle, he will also encounter items that will increase his strength, defense, and raise his HP and MP.
