A knight in 11th Century Europe, Leon is a skilled warrior, and he, along with his closest friend Mathias Cronqvist, leads a company of soldiers that, due to Leon's leadership and Mathias's tactics, have never been defeated. Noble, fearless, yet somewhat naive, he has dedicated himself to defeating heretics and heathens in God's name. These actions have earned him the title of Baron, and he is betrothed to Sara Trantoul, the daughter of a wealthy landowner.
Upon the death of Mathias' wife, Elisabetha, and the older man's subsequent illness, Leon leads their company alone for a year, managing to uphold its winning streak. But when monsters invade his lands and his betrothed is kidnapped by Walter Bernhard, he is forced to renounce his title and his knighthood to go save her. Leaving behind his sword, which is the property of the company, he bravely, yet foolishly, enters the Forest of Eternal Night. Once inside the forest, he is trapped by the barrier that Walter uses to prevent hunters from leaving, and he meets Rinaldo Gandolfi, an old man that lives nearby. Rinaldo gives him a whip created with alchemy for use as a weapon, as well as the ability to use magical relics.
The whip is Leon's primary weapon in battle, and over the course of the game, he will learn a variety of attacks for use with it. In certain areas of the castle, he will be able to upgrade it to an elemental whip, eventually being able to use a Fire Whip, a Lightning Whip, an Ice Whip, and eventually, the legendary Vampire Killer Whip. As well as its obvious use as a weapon, Leon can use the whip to hook to railings and bars to swing around to reach certain areas of the castle. He can also use his gauntlet to guard and absorb the power unleashed by enemies' special attacks and use it to power magical relics that can be found throughout the castle, as well as use hearts -which can be gained through destroying candle stands, defeating certain enemies, and perfect guarding - to use the five different sub-weapons: knife, axe, crystal, holy water, and cross. After defeating bosses, he will gain different colored orbs that can be combined with the sub-weapons to create different, increasingly powerful attacks.
