Long ago, there was a war, a magical war. Magical creatures, called Espers, had once lived peacefully side by side with humans, but the humans’ greed and lusting after the Espers’ power led to trouble. Espers were captured, and their magic forcefully drained from them to be then infused into humans. These actions sparked off the War of the Magi, which left the world a smoking ruin. After it was over, the Espers fled to their own world, and magic simply ceased to exist in the human world.
One thousand years later, civilization has recovered from the magical destruction. Coal, oil, and steam engines have rediscovered, and technology reigns. Magic and Espers are considered little more than children’s fairy tales. All of this is threatened however, when the powerful Empire sets out to take over the world, using magic to do so. When one of those supposedly fictitious Espers is found frozen in the ice in the mining town of Narshe, the Empire is determined to have it, and it is willing to destroy anyone and anything to have its way.
The Empire sends two Magitek soldiers to Narshe, accompanied by a mysterious young woman who is gifted naturally with the power of magic, with orders to retrieve the frozen creature and bring it to the Empire capital city of Vector. But things do not go according to plan for the soldiers. The woman reacts to the Esper, freeing her from the control of the Empire, and starting her off on a journey that will take her across two worlds and introduce her to over a dozen different people from all walks of life, and even from different species. Together they must band together to stop the Empire and save the Espers, as well as the world, but will they be able to do so in time?
