Celes Chere
A Magitek Knight raised from birth by the Empire, Celes is the second person you meet who is gifted with magic. But her power came at a price. When she was an infant, an Esper was drained of its magic, and its power genetically fused into Celes. Afterward, she was raised by Professor Cid, a scientist who runs the Magitek Research Lab, and he treated her as if she were his own daughter. As a general in the Imperial Army, Celes committed several heinous acts, including the torching of the town of Miranda, and she has difficulty coping with her past actions.
Celes is firm in her beliefs and actions, though some of her past actions come back to haunt her. When she learns of Kefka's plans for the people of Doma Castle, she rebels, which gets her locked up in a cell under South Figaro. It is there where she meets, and is rescued by, Locke. She refuses his help at first, demanding to know why he is bothering to help her, but he only gives her a vague answer and leads her out of town. She is quite capable of defending herself, and when Locke doubts that, she proves it to him in their first major battle together. Eventually, something begins to develop between her and Locke, but that fragile trust is broken and nearly destroyed for good when Locke begins to doubt her true reasons for being with the party.
In battle, Celes is skilled with magic and the use of a blade. She is especially adept at using her Runic skill, a technique that allows her to use her sword to absorb any magic spell that is cast, be in friend or foe.
