The 13th century was a time of peace and prosperity for the land of Gallowmere. The kingdom had not seen a war in ages, and everyone was fine with that. King Peregrin ruled from his castle, where he was regaled with tales of dragons slain and legions defeated by a young man named Daniel Fortesque. Impressed with what he had heard, Peregrin knighted Daniel and made him Head of the Royal Battalion. It was an honorary position of course, since the kingdom had been at peace for so long. Sir Dan's stories may not have been true, but he was nothing if not a great storyteller, and Peregrin was a sucker for a good story.
But then things went down the drain when Zarok appeared on the scene after years of exile. Angry and bitter, and filled with wrath, he unleashed a massive army against Gallowmere. Peregrin desperately needed a hero and knew exactly who he needed. Sir Dan was thrown in front of the King's army and sent off to face Zarok's undead legions, only to be struck down by the first arrow fired. Zarok's army was defeated without him, but Zarok himself disappeared.
Embarrassed by Sir Dan's poor performance and knowing that his people needed to feel safe, Peregrin announced that Sir Dan had died in combat after slaying Zarok. Sir Dan was given a hero's funeral, the people celebrated him as the savior of Gallowmere, and Zarok was forgotten.
Which was all fine and dandy until, one hundred years later, his scheming and plotting finished, Zarok returned...
