Sir Daniel Fortesque
A gallant and brave young knight, Sir Dan was slain during The Battle of Gallowmere mere moments after defeating the evil wizard Zarok, and ridding the land of his evil.
Or at least, that’s what everyone thinks.
In this case, truth was much more mundane than fiction, and Sir Dan actually died at the start of the battle, struck down by an arrow to the eye in the very first charge. He was given a hero’s funeral and laid to rest in a grand crypt, and the people of Gallowmere revered him as the knight who had saved their kingdom. One hundred years later, the same spell cast by Zarok that is waking up the dead everywhere also rouses him. Spurred on by the mockery of the gargoyles in his crypt, Sir Dan sets out to do the deed that he is revered for and avenge his ignoble death.
Sir Dan starts out with a small sword and throwing knives found in his crypt. He can gain new weapons as the game progresses by gathering the twenty Chalices of Souls that are scattered among the game’s various areas. Collecting a level’s chalice will allow him to visit the Hall of Heroes after the level is finished and get a new weapon or helpful item. He will also find Life Bottles that will automatically restore him to full health when his energy is depleted, as well as Energy Vials that will refill his energy bar and Life Bottles. Money chests and bags are also scattered about and can be used to purchase items from the Merchant Gargoyles.
In battle, Sir Dan can use multiple kinds of weapons: swords, knives, clubs, an axe, a war hammer, bows, even chicken drumsticks. He can also find different kinds of shields to protect against enemy attacks. In the annoying event that his weapon is stolen, he will pull off one of his arms and use it to beat enemies over the head until they give the stolen weapon back.
Witches
Witches were once common throughout Gallowmere, but most have moved on and now only a few remain. They can be summoned with the appropriate talisman in certain areas of the game, and offer valuable rewards if Sir Dan does them a favor.
Zarok
Former sorcerer of King Peregrin’s court, Zarok was exiled for performing experiments on the dead. Angry and bitter over this, he swore vengeance and vanished. He spent a while nursing his grudge against Gallowmere and plotting his next move, before gathering a massive army and marching on his former home. His legions were defeated, and he fled into hiding once again.
A century later, his scheming was complete and he returned. Casting a spell over Gallowmere that rose the dead and made the living his unknowing slaves, he walked through the once peaceful kingdom, leaving magical mayhem in his wake.
But, unbeknownst to him, his spell had also awakened his old enemy, Sir Daniel Fortesque...
Gargoyles
There are two types of Gargoyles in the land of Gallowmere: Merchant Gargoyles and Information Gargoyles.
Merchant Gargoyles sell items to Sir Dan at a hefty price. They will also recharge his shields and magic swords for him, again at an insane price.
Information Gargoyles are excellent observers (What else have they got to do?) and know well the history of Gallowmere. Unfortunately, they also know the real story behind Sir Dan and The Battle of Gallowmere, and will mock him with the information at any chance. But they will also offer assistance in the form of vague and cryptic clues, that is if one can make sense out of their weird form of speech, as they refer to themselves as "we" and "us", refer to Zarok as "the Master" and Sir Dan as "it".
