Sir Daniel Fortesque

Skeletonized human male
Age: Approx. 636 years

The hero of Gallowmere, Sir Dan had been moved to the museum in London sometime before the start of the game, which is where he's at when Palethorn's spell rouses him from his peaceful 500 year doze. Seeming not to be entirely surprised at finding himself among the living again, he is given the run down on recent events from Winston, and he quickly grabs a sword and is raring to go.

Sir Dan finds a small sword and a pistol in the museum, and will later collect a variety of weapons by either finding them lying around in various places, or by collecting the Chalice of Souls that is in each level. When he returns to Professor Hamilton's lab at the end of each level, the Professor can use the magic contained within it to make Dan a new weapon. If he replays a level in which he has already collected the chalice and gets it again, he will get a chest of gold instead. Sir Dan will also find Life Bottles that will automatically restore him to full health when his energy is depleted, as well as Energy Vials that will refill his energy bar and Life Bottles. Money chests and bags are also scattered about and can be used to purchase items from the Spiv.

In battle, Sir Dan can use a variety of weapons, including: swords, a pistol, a blunderbuss, bombs, even a Gatling gun. Again, his weapon of last resort is his arm, which he will rip off and use in a pinch. After a certain point in the game, he also has the ability to take his head off and place it on one of the hands that can be found running around many levels. When he does this, his head and body can function independently of each other, though they cannot be controlled simultaneously. Since DanHand is much smaller than Dan’s actual body, it can go places that Dan himself cannot, and in some levels this is necessary to move on.

Winston Chapelmount

Ghost boy
Age: Unknown, but was around the age of 10 at death

A cheery lad, Winston was summoned by Professor Hamilton and sent to go find Sir Dan. When he finds him, he gives him a rundown on recent events, and throughout the game, he gives Sir Dan tips and hints (though some of them come a little after the fact). He will also act as a save point in large levels, enabling Dan to save the game before a boss battle or in the middle of a difficult level. During a few points in the game, when Sir Dan does not return to the lab between levels, Winston will give him a new weapon if Sir Dan had collected the previous level's chalice.
