Quiet and brooding, Alucard is the game's protagonist. A man of few words, Alucard had assisted Trevor Belmont in his quest to defeat Dracula in the year 1,476 in the events of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Afterwards he had gone into what was supposed to have been an eternal sleep to rid the world of his own cursed bloodline. The presence of his father's evil awakens him from his slumber.
Little is known about Alucard's history. Born of an unusual union of Dracula and a human woman, he possess the vampiric powers of his vampire father, while still possessing the feelings and compassion of his human mother. The two opposing forces are always in conflict, making him cringe back from what he is even as he uses his powers for good. Despite his mother's death at the hands of humans, he does not hate them, and works to protect them from his father's rage.
Alucard uses a variety of swords, knives, knuckles, and other weapons to defeat the undead hoards that reside inside Castlevania. He starts with a powerful sword from his mother's family, but that is lost early on, forcing him to use weapons, as well as armor, dropped by enemies and sold by the Master Librarian. Since he is half vampire, he can use vampiric magic, and he can learn a variety of spells to make his quest easier. In addition, he can summon various familiars to aid him in his fight.
