Five years ago, Maria was kidnapped by Dracula to use as a hostage against Richter Belmont. When he rescued her, she swore that she would become a vampire hunter to, and joined her future brother-in-law on his quest to destroy Dracula. When he disappeared without a trace, she became determined to find him and set out to do just that. When Castlevania appeared in front of her, she entered without hesitation.
Maria meets Alucard by the large clock early on in the game. She is wary of him at first, before she says that she will trust him for the time being. She leaves to continue her own search of the castle. She and Alucard cross paths a few times during the first half of the game and exchange information before she leaves the castle on Alucard's advice so he can continue on and defeat Dracula on his own. She seems to develop feelings for him during the course of the game.
Available as a playable character in the Saturn version only, Maria uses subweapons, magic and her animal friends to defeat her foes. Since she does not gain levels, she must collect Heart and Hp Max Ups to increase her stats Her game, like Richter's, has no dialogue and no cut scenes.
